Meta’s VR bet: How do vacation headset prices compare?

Meta said earlier this month that it would lay off more than 11,000 employees, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg writing that he would shift more resources to AI and the Metaverse’s long-term vision.

The change has been lambasted by those who say he should scrap the VR-focused plan and start over.

Zuckerberg has also come under scrutiny over the proposed acquisition of VR content maker Within Unlimited, though the Federal Trade Commission says the deal would ‘create a monopoly’ in the dedicated fitness apps market. to VR.

However, while the Metaverse has come under fire, VR headsets remain popular with gamers.

Nevertheless, prices can vary – and the Meta Quest Pro is another of Meta’s bets.

The company’s “most advanced headset” – the first in a new “premium class” of VR headsets – costs a hefty sum of nearly $1,500.

This order includes the headset, two auto-tracking Meta Quest Touch Pro controllers, pen tips, partial light blockers, and a charging station.

In a statement, Meta said it enables “color mixed reality”, blending virtual experiences with the physical world and comes with high-resolution sensors, next-generation pancake optics, advanced LCD displays and a Sleek and Comfortable Design with Eye Tracking and Natural Facial Expressions.

“All of this makes Meta Quest Pro the ideal device for collaborating and working much more naturally in virtual reality. And we plan to work closely with developers over time to create a rich ecosystem of experiences that take advantage of Meta Quest Pro’s innovative mixed reality and social presence capabilities,” the company wrote, adding that it was excited to see what developers are creating with the tools released for the Presence Platform suite of machine perception capabilities and… ‘IA.

Meta added that the headset would be “ideal for the future of work,” including use in Horizon Workrooms meetings, as well as for art and other activities.

“Meta is positioning the new Meta Quest Pro headset as an alternative to using a laptop,” Rolf Illenberger, Founder and CEO of VRdirect, told The Associated Press, noting that for businesses operating in virtual worlds of the metaverse is still “totally exaggerated.”

The company said it continues to improve the VR software experience and will add recording and streaming for MR in a future software update.

It is available to consumers where Meta Quest products are supported online and at select retailers, including Best Buy and Amazon.

The Meta Quest 2 was marked down from around $400 to $350 on Saturday, and the Oculus Quest 2 is selling for $500.

The Playstation VR2, which features smart eye tracking, sharp focus, immersive 3D audio and more, will be available in February for around $550.

The Apple VR/augmented reality headset would cost more than $2,000, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
