Colt and IBM launch joint Industry 4.0 lab in UK

Colt Technology Services, a provider of digital infrastructure and broadband connectivity solutions, and IBM have launched a joint lab environment to provide end customers with secure edge cloud services backed by IBM Cloud Satellite.

The joint lab will also address challenges related to the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies in the manufacturing value chain, such as the integration of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) systems. ).

IBM and Colt have a long-standing collaboration and a shared vision to bring the innovation that matters to businesses in all industries by improving their operations and better serving their customers.

Designed to provide proof of concepts and optimized solutions to support manufacturing companies in their transformation to Industry 4.0, the lab will provide hands-on experiences for companies from all sectors.

The lab will help companies research ways to leverage and monetize 5G and edge capabilities such as visual inspection, supply chain telemetry monitoring, IT/OT security, remote management and threat monitoring.

To power these test use cases, Colt will leverage its next-generation SD-WAN cloud services and Colt Edge, an intelligent and flexible virtualized computing platform. It offers a suite of edge solutions that can be used for multiple services, ranging from private 5G to industry-specific solutions.

In collaboration with IBM Consulting, this approach includes the seamless integration of IBM’s hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence technologies, including IBM Cloud Satellite and IBM Maximo Application Suite.

IBM and Colt technologies will create an environment for customers that will optimize the performance of their manufacturing operations while enabling the seamless convergence of IT and OT at the network edge.

As “compute + connectivity” redefines the era of hybrid cloud and AI; this collaboration enables our customers to accelerate the way they develop and deploy innovative new capabilities that will transform their business.

The lab has integrated and enabled three fundamental cutting-edge use cases for Industry 4.0.

These include inference based on visual inspection at the edge, such as identifying defective parts or issues in the supply chain and automatically triggering intelligent workflows.

Another is supply chain telemetry at the edge, where Maximo identifies gaps in inventory and parts and automates the ordering and fulfillment process.

The third is edge security, threat monitoring, and data protection across the entire IT/OT and cloud environment.

Mirko Voltolini, Vice President of Innovation at Colt, said, “Colt and IBM have worked together for many years, and the launch of the joint lab is a customer showcase of the power of our collaboration. We bring together the best in connectivity, edge and smart manufacturing solutions, backed by expertise from IBM and Colt, to demonstrate how we can support migration to IBM Maximo Application Suite and power transformation journeys of our customers.

“Industry 4.0 has enormous potential for the manufacturing sector, and the lab is an exciting next step for Colt and IBM as we help companies improve the visibility, analysis, performance and maintenance of their systems and industrial operations.

Jose Favilla, director and global leader of Industry 4.0 at IBM, adds: “The partnership between Colt and IBM allows us to bring the best combination of connectivity, Edge, security and asset performance management. This enables our industrial customers to capture the value of data. treatment at the periphery.”

Colt’s cloud portfolio and SD-WAN services are powered by the Colt IQ Network, which provides customers with improved performance, control, flexibility and scalability, combining industry-leading customer service with award-winning innovation.

The dense fiber optic network owned and operated by Colt enables businesses to benefit from a seamless end-to-end connection to the cloud.
